What are refurbished laptops?
There are so many positive reasons to buy a refurbished laptop. A refurbished laptop is not bought brand new from the manufacturer, it is a laptop that has been repaired, reconditioned or updated. Through internal and external cleaning, testing, quality checks and updates, it is given a new lease of life so it can be sold back to the consumer.
Depending on how old or damaged a piece of tech is determines to what degree they can be refurbished. Many will look and work as well as a brand new model, while others may have surface scratches or other small, usually cosmetic, marks. These are often given a Grade B.
Whatever happens, you’ll have all the information you need when buying one of Hardware Associates’ refurbished laptops. We always refurbish laptops to the best quality possible and are always open and honest about the condition of the model.
All of our laptops are either a Grade A or Grade B - learn more about what this means in our refurbished grade guide.
What are the advantages of laptops over desktops?
Laptops are incredibly portable
The main advantage to buying a laptop over a desktop is portability - they are designed to be both compact and lightweight. Now people are working at home so much more frequently as well as needing to travel for work, a laptop is often the best way to take your work between home and the office. This can also be a great time saver and saves logging in across multiple computers.
Stylish and smaller in size
Laptops are more aesthetically pleasing than desktops with a huge range of appealing and stylish designs available, all the way from budget to top spec models. They look far better on a desk, take up less room and are generally more discreet and sleek looking.
This is both an asset to you the user, and to potential clients, as laptops can be very professional looking and offer reassurance that you’re contactable wherever you’re working.
Generally easier to use
Laptops on the whole require less cords, wires, ports and plugs than desktop computers, as the screen and keyboard are already connected, and typically you will have a trackpad for the mouse and enjoy in-built speakers. For those who struggle with technology, this is a definite bonus.
For the most part, if they have a good battery life, you don’t even need to plug in for many work sessions or meetings, and Wi-Fi connections give greater flexibility in where you can work in a room.

How do refurbished laptops compare to buying new?
There are a few differences between brand new laptops and refurbished ones, such as:
Laptops that are refurbished cost less
The cost of a refurbished product is significantly cheaper than a new one. This is the main reason that people come to us as they are looking to find better tech for their budget. In most instances you will be able to afford a newer model with better specs when you choose to buy refurbished, then if you bought a brand new laptop straight from the manufacturer.
Choose Grade A or B condition
Our refurbished products have undergone an extensive process to return them to the best quality possible. Our experts are excellent at what they do, however there is a variation in the finished standard.
We will only sell refurbished products that are graded either A or B, meaning that you’ll find minimal cosmetic marks on your laptop and it will work as if new to meet your computing needs.
They’re ‘previously loved’
It’s important to note that not all refurbished models will have had major technical works or repairs carried out, or even have been used for long periods of time by a previous owner.
The irony with this phrase ‘previously loved’ is that many refurbished laptops may have been brand new and returned straight away, but because they have technically been ‘used’, they cannot be sold on again as new. Others may be older, used models, but this will be reflected in the price and value.
Buy from a trusted seller
There’s a big difference between buying a used product from another consumer and buying a refurbished product from experts like Hardware Associates – the refurbished product has been brought up to an excellent standard, with data wiped making it secure. The product can be trusted as professionals have checked it, unlike many used products often sold online.
You won’t get the same shiny packaging you get with a new product with a refurbished product, but the good news is, you don’t need it, as there’s very little difference between a new or refurbished laptop once the packaging has been removed. If you buy a product from us you will see that we even reuse our boxes in order to reduce the impact that our business has on the environment.
At Hardware Associates we ensure all laptops are in good working condition. You’ll be able to use it as you would any new laptop and of course, we provide a free one-year warranty on all systems and laptops to give you peace of mind.
The benefits of choosing a refurbished product
At Hardware Associates we aim to save the planet through our three main principles:
A refurbished product reduces the need for more products to be made. The average product lasts three or four years before going to landfill. By choosing a refurbished product you’re extending that lifespan and reducing how much is going to landfill and how many new products are made.
Repairing a product instead of buying a new product also means time and energy will go into repairing the product rather than going into creating a new one. Fewer devices being made means less harmful substances going into the air, less energy being used, fewer by products going into the earth and air and less of the planet’s core minerals destroyed through the production process.
By repairing a product in the country it is already in, you’re stopping a device from being made in a different country and shipped across the world, reducing your carbon footprint.
At Hardware Associates you can get good-as-new products for a fraction of the price of a new device. You can save money whether you’re a single consumer buying one or two products, or a business, school or charity buying a large number of items.
